Student Choreography

Bluewater Dance Theatre is seeking student choreographers ages 13 and up who are interested in creating works for the 2026 showcase. This program offers space for young artists to explore movement, work with dancers of their choosing, and experience the full arc of preparing a piece for the stage—from early planning through final production. We will be accepting up to 3 student choreographers.

Application

The application process consists of 2 components:

1. Video Audition

A video audition should include a 30–90 second clip of the dancer’s original choreography. The video can be informal and does not need to feature the piece they plan to create for the program.

There are two ways to submit your video audition:

Option 1 - Upload your video online (Youtube, Google Drive, Dropbox) and include a link with your application below.

Option 2 - Attachment emailed to bharneck@gmail.com

2. Written Proposal

A short written description (approximately 100–250 words) outlining your proposed piece of choreography. The guiding questions below are available to help you shape your proposal. You do not need to answer every question.

  • What is the title or main idea of your piece?
  • What style(s) of dance will you use?
  • What story, theme, or concept are you exploring through the choreography?
  • How many dancers do you plan to include, and why?
  • What music are you considering, and how does it support your idea?
  • What movement qualities or choreographic elements will define the piece?
  • What are your initial thoughts for costumes, colors, or overall visual style?
  • Do you have ideas for lighting, props, or staging?
  • What do you want the audience to feel or understand when watching your piece?
  • Why are you interested in creating this choreography?

Application Deadline: April 30, 2026

The Process

  • Mentorship - Choreographers will meet with the Artistic Director at key points throughout the summer. An initial meeting before rehearsals begin helps refine ideas and prepare for working with dancers, followed by periodic check‑ins offering guidance with music, costumes, lighting, and choreographic development.
  • Cast Your Dancers - Choreographers may independently choose who they would like to have dance in their piece. Outside dancers are permitted. Dancers must be available for all rehearsals the week leading up to the show.
  • Create Your Rehearsal Schedule - Choreographers will work with their cast to build a rehearsal schedule. They will have access to our studio space. Schedules must be coordinated with the Artistic Director at least 1 week in advanced. Choreographers should plan for a minimum of 8 hours of rehearsal throughout the summer.
  • Costuming - Choreographers are responsible for selecting and sourcing costumes for their piece. They may choose specific items for their dancers to purchase, set a general color or style for dancers to provide from their own wardrobe, or supply the costumes themselves.
  • Music Editing - Choreographers will learn to edit their own music.
  • Plan Stage Lighting - Choreographers will work with the theater's lighting designer to set lighting cues to elevate their dance piece.
  • On-Stage Rehearsal - During tech week, choreographers will run a short on-stage rehearsal to ensure their staging, lighting and choreography is ready for performance.
